Tonight is going to be very frigid across all of Texoma. Every location will drop below freezing, and some areas could even get into the teens. This is following a very cold day, 30's for highs, that featured bouts of snow flurries and 20 degree windchill readings. The light snow/flurries potential has ended tonight across most of Texoma, however, extreme northeastern Texas and extreme southeastern Oklahoma could see an isolated flake in the next hour. Currently the low level clouds are clearing from NW to SE, and the temps are making a noticeable drop behind the clearing line. Here are some of the current temperatures in Oklahoma. Notice the single digits in the Panhandle of Oklahoma!
Temperatures around the Metroplex will be in the mid to upper 20's tomorrow morning, while locations further north will be close to 20; some low lying areas in southern Oklahoma will get down into the 16-19 degree range. Here's a brief checklist to make sure you're aware during this cold weather: make sure you bring in all pets, turn off the sprinkler system, let faucets drip/wrap exposed piping, and check on any elderly people that could be without proper heating overnight. Some of tonight's models are hinting at a slight return in some moisture moving off of the Gulf about three days from; it's very minimal moisture and it's in our extreme southern counties, but it's a trend that we need to keep an eye on. (I'll have an update on this moisture return tomorrow and keep in mind the precip's a slim shot right now.) Around this same time frame another cold front will be moving southward towards our area.(Parts of northern Oklahoma could see some light flurries with the passage of the front.) Originally the models were showing some really cold air moving in behind this front, but most of the models, minus the NAM, have backed off of the really cold air. I think the air will be colder than what the models are showing right now due to the origin of the cold air and the increased snow cover in the northern part of the country. Temps should fall back into the mid 40's with the passage of this frontal system. Another system, with more precipitation possible late this weekend or early next week; following it will be another cold blast. I foresee several more strong cold fronts in December. Our winter forecast that we published several weeks ago is holding true, so far. We predict that Texoma will have above average snowfall, above average precip, and several arctic intrusions. I'll have an updated discussion tomorrow evening as well as the latest drought monitor. I'm sure this past rain event made a huge dent in the drought!
